Mahatma Gandhi ji fought for the freedom of India along with other freedom fighter, so in respect to that, after some parliament discussion among the government officials decided to put Mahatma Gandhi Ji’s portrait in Indian currency notes in 1969.
Before that, a picture of the Lion capital of Ashoka was printed on most of the Indian currency notes.
According to the rules of currency of ordinance, one rupee note was issued by the Government of India, while currency ranging from two rupees to 2000 rupees was issued by the Reserve Bank of India. Currently the production of two rupees is discontinued, but the old notes are still in circulation.
Before the picture of Mahatma Gandhi and Ashoka pillar, the picture of King George was printed on the notes. The paper notes of Mahatma Gandhi started from 1996, which is still in circulation.

Mahatma Gandhi’s full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, born on 2nd October 1869 in Porbandar Gujarat, in a Hindu family, he studied law. He spent 21 years in South Africa and developed his political views. After arriving in South Africa he faced discrimination because of his skin colour. He was not allowed to sit with European passengers in the coach and asked to sit on the floor near the driver, then beaten when he refused.

Gandhi followed a vegetarian diet. he wrote a book titled ” The Moral basis of Vegetarianism. Gandhi ji limited his diet to raw vegetables, curd, fruits, seeds and nuts.
